In my opinion, a shoe like the Instinct VSR is the closest thing you can get to a sport and bouldering all arounder right now; soft enough to allow for flexibility to adapt to angles above and below vertical, enough support to stick smaller edges, and the sensitivity you need to get the read on how secure your foot placements feel.
When taking the Instinct VSRs outside, I found that they performed well on both super steep and slightly overhanging, off-vertical terrain. As mentioned, the soft rubber proved to be ideal on more technical routes, where proper weight placement on small footholds is critical. I noticed this particularly while climbing polished limestone in Rifle. The downturned angle of the shoe is perfect for the really steep stuff though too, as it helps you to to really “grab” footholds in an overhang.
Overall if you’re looking for a relatively comfy well-fitting technical shoe I would definitely recommend the Instinct VS-R. Whether you’re an indoor only climber that occasionally ventures outside or a dedicated year-round outdoor climber they’re definitely a shoe to consider. They give me so much confidence in my feet even on the most desperate of footholds, I will certainly be purchasing another pair and recommending them to those after a technical rock shoe. For me they are the perfect shoe!
Soft and sensitive are the two words that echoed through our testers’ review notes on the new Instinct VSR. Built almost exactly the same as the outstanding Instinct VS—a favorite around here—shoe designers put Vibram Grip 2 rubber on the shoe, which is a softer and more supple compound. The other major change was making the upper fit even closer, so testers said, “I wore it like a sticky-rubber sock; my toes could actually feel even quarter-inch bumps.” The VSR stood out impressively for bouldering when techy heel and toe hooking were necessary. In an apples-to-apples comparison with the Instinct VS, testers found that they complemented each other well. A single Velcro strap dials in fit for the microsuede upper, and a pleasant surprise: Even though the Grip 2 rubber is very soft, it has impressive durability, showing no signs of damage after three months of use.
