The main advantage, of course, is added security. They can’t offer quite the same level of security as a normal screwgate. They could perhaps be opened if the catch is pulled down from above. Then the gate could come open as normal if pushed from the side. However this would need 2 clear actions in different directions and we consider it low probability this would happen. It is possible though. So, they won’t suit every occasion. They certainly inspire confidence in many situations though.

The Edelrid Pure Slider is a light and compact auto-locking carabiner that is designed, and thrives, while being used on the sharp end. Traversing climbs or pitches where the crux comes above only a single piece leaves one exposed in the random event that the rope comes unclipped from the protection, something which has happened to countless people. A very easy to open and deploy locker like the Pure Slider can nullify these risks, and is a useful tool for lead climbers, whether on sport or trad pitches.

They were originally designed so they could rotate in a bolt hanger and they do that easily, they can be used with a clip stick with no problem, they are ideal on a first quickdraw where you want to be sure the carabiner gate can’t be compromised as you climb past and, if you don’t want to carry a screwgate for every situation that would normally warrant one,  they offer a good in between choice and save around 10 grams on the weight of a screwgate (depending on screwgate model).

The slider was extremely simple to operate-just slide down and push the gate open. This became automatic with just a little practice and was easy enough to operate with thin gloves on. Of course the typical human brain can conjure all sorts of scenarios in which the gate might accidently open, such as the rope sliding over the mechanism or a sling twisting over it. But in all my 30+ years of climbing I have never had any sort of carabiner accidently opening and the stories I hear are usually freak occurrences. So the probability is the locking mechanism will work perfectly well in most conditions – as it has for us throughout the test period.

Climbing Gear Review

From the school of simple, light, and ingenious comes this locking mechanism from the engineering wizards at Edelrid. It includes a small sliding tab on the outside of the gate near the nose; just place your thumb over the tab, push down and in, and the gate unlocks and opens almost simultaneously. “It’s the easiest locking mechanism I’ve ever used because there’s no new motion to learn,” one tester said. “It’s muscle memory I already have.” Since it’s an auto-locker, you don’t have to keep checking to make sure your gates are locked. And at only 1.5 times the weight of a light non-locker (1.5 oz.), you can carry a few extra on a long route without worrying about adding too much heft. “With a minimal weight penalty and easy-open system, there’s no reason not to pack a few,” said one tester who used this biner as the first clip on a sketchy sport climb in
Clear Creek Canyon, Colorado.
