Description

The all new MAGO dominates small footholds like no other shoe on the market. New innovative materials and further refined technologies perfect this specialized performance shoe. The highly asymmetric and downturned shape, in combination with a TPS insert and X-Tension rand, work in unison giving climbers arch support, maximum toe power, and precision without sacrificing underfoot sensitivity. A unique multi panel upper features an extended Alcantara toe pocket for comfort and strategically placed panels of perforated microsuede for a glove like fit. The Mago is the most supportive lace-up in our Specialized category and truly excels on micro edges on steep demanding routes.

VIBRAM® XS Grip2 Technology

VIBRAM® XS Grip2

Represents the natural evolution of VIBRAM® XS Grip, the new XS Grip2 delivers highly improved grip, while maintaining consistent performance in all temperatures. XS Grip 2 is the best solution in pure friction situations while remaining durable and even-wearing.
X-Tension System Technology

X-Tension System

Innovative concept of active midsole adapting to the footshape while loading and unloading bodyweight to the forefoot area, for the best power transmission. The pre-tensioned rubber rand enhances toe power, providing a direct connection among the front edge of the sole, the upper closure (lacing, Velcro®, elastic band) and heel area. In combination with half soles, the X-TENSION system supports the arch and forefoot without reducing sensitivity the way stiff midsoles do.

In Italian, Mago means Magician! To sum this shoe up, the new Mago is improved, feels leaner (it feels light but is it lighter than V2?), more precise, has better feel and a better fit. It edges brilliantly and excels where the footholds are small. You can really power into the footholds. It’s still more of a specialist tool for the rock but if you’re looking for shoe with the attributes I’ve described, then check it out. It’s certainly a magical “go-to” in my quiver.

I liked the new SCARPA Mago more than its predecessors. They embraced their niche as a steep-rock specialist more fully, going all in on the genre with a softer, more flexible build that’s retained good edging bite.

Overall the Mago is an edging-focussed shoe and its admittedly beautiful and high-tech construction means it's both sensitive and stiff. It's more of a toe than a heel shoe and it's a brilliant choice for indoor edging and smearing, as well as outdoor routes and bouldering. If you're looking for something for technical heel hooks you might want to look elsewhere, but if you're going to be standing on small edges and want a shoe that's comfortable and sensitive, the Mago is a great choice.
