A superb and incredibly precise performer. Not great for smearing but one of the best for standing on tiny edges. Overall they are well made, as are most Scarpa rockshoes, but the price tag is high at £124.99.
A product of revolutionary shoe designer Heinz Mariacher - a man who wore his EB's so tight he had to slip them on with plastic bags over his feet - the Scarpa Boostic is a marvel of climbing technology and bone crushing agony. With a highly asymmetrical shape and a narrow, tapering fit towards the toe, the Boostic focuses all of the weight of the climber's body through the toe. This makes for an extremely precise climbing platform and some seriously mangled digits at the end of a pitch. The Boostic is an excellent synthesis of down-turn, toe point precision, and rigidity. These combined design features create an edging machine that compensates for its limited sensitivity with the ability to apply tremendous force.
The Scarpa Boostic is a serious contender for my most favorite rock-climbing shoe. Comfortable yet high-performing, the Boostic is an edging titan on everything from low-angle rock to extreme overhangs. After more than a year’s worth of constant climbing in the Scarpa Boostics, during which I happily went through two pairs and climbed routes up to 5.14a, it’s hard not to gush over this shoe, the latest creation from climbing’s best-known cobbler, Heinz Mariacher. Based on my own impressions, and those I’ve been hearing from other ebullient Boostic-wearing climbers at the crags, the Boostic is destined to be a legend. In fact I can’t wait to get my feet into a third pair.
I would recommend these shoes without reservation, and have jokingly told friends they would climb a few letter grades harder with these shoes. And while that might be a stretch, for me, the Boostics have become my go-to shoe for hard redpoints, and are now my favorite shoe in my sport climbing quiver.
Unlike some slippers, the Boostics are easy to get into. The unique sock-like material used at the shoe’s opening is dually functional: It stretches open when you are putting the shoe on, and then sucks around your foot once you’re inside; plus it’s comfortable and it breathes.
The one glaring down side to this shoe is its price—$170 seems hefty, especially if you climb a lot and go through two or more pairs of shoes per year. But if you ask me, you’ll be getting your money’s worth.
The new Boostic (a redesign of the popular Booster) is a top performer at all angles. One tester described the shoe as being the perfect balance between power and delicacy—it’s aggressive but not too downturned. The tensioned shape of the last lets you transmit the force from your whole foot through your toes and onto the rock. Think of the Boostic as a superb edging shoe, but with the shape and generous heel and toe rubber of a steep-climbing slipper. Like most Scarpa shoes, it tends to fit wide, high-volume feet like a glove. But two Velcro straps adjust the fit for a variety of foot sizes and shapes. The 4mm Vibram XS Edge outsole is sticky and durable, and was a favorite among our testers. Unlined synthetic uppers mold to the foot but will not stretch much. Make sure they fit well when new.
