Python

Rating

My vote: None ( 4.8 avg )

Description

The Python was built specifically for our climbing team to satisfy the need for the perfect comp shoe. The ideal tool for high level modern climbing where you need sticky rubber over the toes and full rubber coverage on the outside of the heel for technical heel hooks. The Python has an added tension strap for lower volume feet that can't get a good fit in a slipper. Unlined and super sensitive for technical smears, scums and body tension moves where your feet are barely on the wall.

The La Sportiva Pythons are indoor bouldering and route-climbing slippers that also have a place outdoors on steep pockets and edging climbs. They are one of the better slippers on the market—a new take on a classic design. The Python features some modern upgrades such as rubber on top of the toe for toe hooks, and a little out-of-the way Velcro strap to help keep the slipper on the foot. While it performs well on edges, smears, heel hooks and toe hooks, the Python is a bit baggy in the upper and could be better fitting.

The all-around aggressive gym shoe for those on a budget, the La Sportiva Python has surprisingly great edging capabilities for a slipper. Not a newcomer to the climbing scene, but new to the gear shops of all three of our gyms (instead of just being sold at our Dallas location), the Python delivers power, precision, and surprising comfort to a high-performance slipper. Here’s the lowdown of this flashy, aggressively down-turned shoe, and why it’s a great staple for anyone’s shoe arsenal.

I have a new secret weapon in the fight against gravity: a pair of orange La Sportiva slippers called the Pythons. A year and a half ago, I had an epiphany that I had no idea how to use my feet. Sure, I stood on foot holds, but I became acutely aware of the fact that my upper body was mostly trying to drag my lower along. I immediately set to work on changing this, though it’s no short task to correct more than a decade worth of bad technique. Still, with perseverance, I’ve now gotten to the point that I at least know how I’m supposed to initiate movement with my lower body, even if my execution isn’t always optimal.

So about a year and a half ago I received a pair of La Sportiva Pythons from the crew at Outward Ventures. At first glance you will see a soft slipper type shoe that is apparently designed primarily for smearing, however this shoe can do much more than just smear well, the La Sportiva Python is still my favourite shoe to climb in because it has everything you need from a shoe and is absolutely astonishing as an all rounder shoe.

I have thoroughly enjoyed climbing in these shoes. Their lightness and sensitivity combined with modern features such as added rubber on the toebox have made me climb a lot more precisely and accurately, even when I return to other shoes, which are nowhere near as sensitive. Having spoken to many other boulderers at the crags or down the wall who have a pair, they have all beamed with enthusiasm about how they are and how they perform which is always a sign of a good shoe. For the price, they are in line with other performance slippers out on the market at present and are definitely worth considering.

The Python is a moderately aggressive slipper that is designed to perform well as a bouldering, sport climbing, and gym shoe, yet it still remains comfortable. Climbers looking for a shoe with a supremely comfortable fit that does not sacrifice much on the performance front should give the Python a look.

The Python is extremely sensitive, insanely lightweight, and designed to be the ultimate competition shoe. The Vibram XS Grip rubber perfect for desperate smears, heel hooking, and toe hooking; and, because it’s such a sensitive shoe, it’s very secure on the wall when making technical moves. We found the shoe comfortable, precise, and it fits like a glove–exactly what you want when competing.

Rock and Ice Gear Review rating 4/5

The Pythons are versatile: flat-lasted enough to use on single-pitch finger and hand cracks; and high-performance enough for sport climbs, especially ones with pockets. I recommend them for the gym, Indian Creek, Wild Iris/Sinks and the Red River Gorge.
