The selection of high-top trad shoes has grown rapidly in recent years. The Five Ten Grandstone presents a nice addition to the field. Its softer, more flexible sole addresses the chief complaint made about many of its competitors — that they're too insensitive. In our tests, however, we discovered that the added sensitivity also leads to added foot pain during sustained crack jamming. Nevertheless, the Grandstones manage to fill a nice middle ground between an ultra-stiff trad model and an ordinary rock climbing shoe.
The Five Ten Grandstone offers the protection and all-day comfort of a classic high-top with enough modern performance enhancements to up the ante. It’s a unique shoe for the category, blending old-school characteristics with modern performance enhancements. It’s an excellent choice for sport climbers who also enjoy trad, providing a more familiar feeling. For this tester, it’s the first high-top trad shoe that didn’t feel clunky.
The first time I climbed in this shoe I thought it felt a little stiff to put on but honestly after a day and a handful of pitches it felt broken in and felt much more natural. The break-in period was very short and convenient with very minimal stretch to the shoe. The next thing I noticed about the Grandstone was the Stealth C4 rubber. I was incredibly impressed at how well that rubber stuck to the rock, whether it was smearing on a slabby runout pitch or trusting a dimple on a sheer face. This rubber is on point and I kind of wish all my shoes had it.
