The Evolv Defy is one of the best values in climbing shoes. This new and improved model has a slightly better fitting heel, coated Velcro tabs for increased durability and a splash of color. Other than that not a lot has changed from the previous version. The rubber is the same high friction 4.2mm TRAX with a 1mm half length midsole. The overall design is still nearly identical. The pointy toe and Velcro design is very similar to many of the top rated shoes out there. It is one of the best selling shoes at most Bay Area climbing gyms and according to Evolv.com "the best selling shoe in the country." It climbs good, looks cool and only costs $89. You can almost buy two pair for the price of an upper-end climbing shoe - one tight pair for hard climbs and one pair a half-size bigger for all-day climbing comfort.
Superlight and highly flexible, yet with a relaxed, flat last, the Defy is a steep-rock sport and gym shoe for climbers who loathe the acute foot compression associated with down-turned, banana-shaped performance shoes. That said, the Defy, because it is soft and lets your foot lie flat, requires more foot strength than stiffer-soled shoes and softer models that compress your toes. For most people, the stock model we tested is too soft for climbs where you heavily weight your feet, e.g., slabby to slightly overhanging faces. However, the Defy did shine on severe overhangs, where foot pressure is lighter. For $20 you can custom order the Defy with a stiffer midsole. We didn't test the stiffer version, but like the idea, thinking a stiffer Defy would be a more versatile Defy.
These flat-lasted, asymmetric hook-and-loop kicks are no-nonsense, solid all-arounders. A half-midsole adds a hint of rigidity to this otherwise soft, sensitive shoe. A perforated, synthetic upper and nylon lining prevent much stretch, while the two Velcro straps snug the fit. All testers applauded the Defy VTR’s relaxed fit; one called them “super comfy.” From indoor climbing to desert cracks, these babies received high marks in all categories. Evolv’s 4.2mm TRAX XT-5 rubber stuck to everything we tested. At $89 these are the least expensive shoes in the review.
