Our overall impression is that we love this rope! It is graceful and smooth when handling and presents no obvious user frustrations. It is fairly light, of a versatile diameter, and extremely flexible. It was a close contender for our Editors' Choice award, but lost a couple of points to the Mammut Infinity, which manages to be lighter weight and more durable at the same diameter.
The Eagle Light is the 2nd generation of their Eagle rope which formerly came in a 9.8mm diameter. This new version is slimmed down to 9.5mm. Edelrid claims that “by using state-of-the-art yarns,” they were able to “reduce the diameter without comprising the technical standards.” It shows in the specs too. Both the old 9.8mm and new 9.5mm Eagle ropes weigh 62 grams per meter, yet somehow the new thinner version is stronger and held one more UIAA test fall than the old one (9). The specs also show that it offers slightly less impact force (9.3kN) than the old model.
Don’t fret about the thin diameter on the newest rope from Edelrid’s Pro Line; they’ve put three different finishing treatments on it to optimize durability. “It still has a supple and flexible feel,” one tester said after taking it to a new secret crag in the much-traveled Boulder Canyon, Colorado. Pro Shield, Dry Shield, and Thermo Shield treat both the entire unit and individual yarn fibers to increase dirt and water resistance while maintaining easy clipping, knotting, untying, and coiling.
Our testers deemed this great for long days plugging gear because the Eagle Light stood up to tons of abrasion and running over edges, as well as catching a few big whips, and had no signs of wear. “Plus, it ran through all belay devices and carabiners like a dream.” Even after knotting it into a rats nest right out of the package, our tester found it didn’t twist up or kink once he got it properly flaked.
