Certification

Certifications

The main climbing gear certifications are CE and UIAA--and normally the UIAA creates the rules that the CE body also supports. When possible, we try to list all the certifications the product carries.

To sell a climbing product in Europe, the device must be CE certified. There are no official requirements to sell climbing gear in the US. The UIAA certification is a voluntary process.

Superlight tool, one of the best for mountaineering

Pros
Weight - depending on picks you can go as light as 365g
Not ideal for hard ice (due to light head) but you can still climb WI5 comfortably
Wide selection of picks
Despite the weight the tool feels really solid
Cons
The bottom of the grip is shaped quite weird. I has to use a file to make it more comfortable for my pinky.
Familiarity
I’ve used it a bunch

Great mountaineering / alpine climbing tool. It's meant for snow, glacial ice and easy water ice and for those applications it's probably the best tool on the market.

It's not a tool for M6 or harder drytooling or hard (WI6/WI7) ice, but for anything where weight and cold temperatures make a difference the full carbon/aramid fiber shaft makes a difference.

Gear Junkie Review no rating given just a review

At first, the tools’ lightness made me feel I had to swing harder than usual. But I later realized good sticks came with proper wrist flicking – I had no swing issues afterward. But for pure ice climbing, I believe the added momentum of heavier heads would help bring them around the top of the swing more effectively. For now, Petzl weights will fit, but Elite Climb is working on its own.
