Phud

Description

When developing a new Phud, our focus was on taking the mat back to what it was originally conceived as - a no frills, low cost, entry-level pad for folks just getting into bouldering.

Made in our own factory at our base in Nottingham, the design has simple construction to keep production costs to a minimum. High quality foam wrapped in durable 600D PU coated polyester. Simple shoulder strap, Taco construction, Chamfered corners.

NEW FOR 2014 Phud is available in a couple of varieties.. the standard works edition and as series of Mutants. Our works edition is our off the shelf mat, we make a batch in a single colour and try to keep it in stock. The Mutants are made individually and use the same tough Cordura outer fabric as our Mujo and Project mats. Although we cannot guarantee you will never see one exactly the same the chances are pretty low.

The foam in the Phud has not been compromised for price and is the same excellent foam as you will find in all our pads. Based on some in-depth research, listening to what our customers have to say, and reinforced by our own climbing team’s feedback we have changed the proportions and densities of the foam of our original pads. They now give a sweeter, softer feeling landing surface that is more capable of handling landings from differing heights.

The close density match of the layers also combines to increase the long term durability of the foam and reduces the fade noticed after heavy long term use. We have known our foam suppliers for many years and have listened to their advice and knowledge to maximise the performance and value of the foam we buy and we are confident this as good as it gets.

A phud stops a thud

Pros
Cheap compared to its peers
Easy to carry
Two different foam densities
Cons
Not as big as other pads
Nothing particularly special against its peers
Familiarity
I’ve used it a few of times
Disclaimer
I’m an entry level boulderer / climber

Had this pad for a few months now and been out climbing a bit. Not the biggest pad, but does what it needs to. No bells and whistles, but then for the price (picked mine up for £69) what do you expect.

I wouldn’t go too high with it, and looking at a much larger pad as my main pad, but good secondary pad for the price.
