Climbing Gear Reviews UK

So, in conclusion the Arc’teryx Skaha harness is a great addition from the climbing designers. It’s superlight, comfortable and soft feeling next to skin. The generous, rigid gear loops offer enough scope for plenty of sport quickdraw or a full trad rack and the burly tie-in loops offer confidence to fall off those harder climbs. Finishing touches include a complimentary colour scheme and embroidered Arc’teryx decal and Archeopteryx on the waistbelt. All in a lightweight and compact package..." go to full review

Overall I found the Ghost Tech a great little axe for a bit of glacier travel, winter runs in Scotland and as a bit of a back up for some single axe days when iffy conditions might mean a second axe proves very welcome. The Ghost Tech would be a good choice for runners, climbers facing a glacial/snow slope approach and descent from a big alpine rock route and ski mountaineers.go to full review

So, things I like about the Zodiac Tech GTX are: they are fantastically precise on technical scrambling/alpine ground; I can wear them all day on rocky ground and carry a full pack; the soft heel pack is a blessed relief on tired Achilles (I have been recuperating from a nasty Achilles injury and these have been my preferred boot). No real downers apart from: you might find them overkill for general hiking and not warm enough for winter climbing.go to full review

So, I have now been using the PETZL NEOX for a couple of months and using it exclusively for all my indoor and outdoor lead belaying. I have been impressed at the handling capacity, it’s not going to work so well with your furry old, fat 10.5 climbing gym rope but for modern, thinner ropes it has been excellent. I use an 9.1mm rope for outdoor and a 10mm for indoors and they have both been fine (it is rated for rope diameters between 8.5 and 11mm). I feel that the NEOX may not a replacement..." go to full review

So, if you are looking for a fully featured and adjustable climbing harness that you can use for all your climbing and mountaineering adventures the Corax is well worth a look. It is comfortable, has generous gear loops and a burly construction. It’s not the lightest harness in PETZL range but it will last a long time and is versatile enough for any climbing adventures you have in the dream bucket for years to come.go to full review

So, to conclude the Scarpa Origin VS are a great and easy-to-wear climbing shoe, perfectly comfortable to wear all day long both for indoor and outdoor climbing. the rubber has good friction and the toe profile should shut a wide variety of foot shapes whilst offering reasonable precision for intricate footwear.go to full review

For climbers, the main plus is the stiffened midsole and climbing-specific toe profile. Although the Konseal FL 2 isn’t super narrow in fit they do have a precision feel to them, the fit can be adjusted using the climbing shoe style lacing and the Vibram Megagrip sole offers high friction on rocky terrain; which further places them in the approach shoe category. Arc’teryx has designed the shoe for fast and light rocky Alpine terrain and I would agree, that they will excel in these situations..." go to full review

In terms of performance, the uppers have proved comfortable and robust for hiking, crossing scree and climbing in. I’ve been using them for most of the summer and they are showing little signs of wear, I am a heavy user as I am out regularly. I have noticed some small nicks to the EVA midsole – but this would be perfectly normal in the terrain I venture out in. The generous toe rand is perfect for scrambling and adds an element of water resistance for that occasional unavoidable large puddle..." go to full review

Any downsides of this harness? Well, just one really. The gear loops. It has 4 gear loops, 2 on each side, both of which are well placed. However, they are annoyingly tiny, unless you have only a few clean nosed quickdraws (normal karabiners snag very easily). It seems a shame that it doesn’t have 4 slightly bigger, fatter gear loops which would mean racking and organising gear (even just a big rack of quickdraws) would be simple.go to full review

Overall the Edelrid Tommy Caldwell Eco Dry DT 9.6 gives you a durable, good handling rope with excellent eco credentials (Bluesign certified). If you want a premium rope suitable for working routes or surviving the abuse of big mountain routes it is the perfect pick.go to full review
