Description

The Butora Gomi is a comfortable down-turned performance climbing shoe wrapped in our NEO Fuse sticky rubber that is best suited for sport climbing and bouldering. The Gomi gets back to our tradition of carefully pairing comfort with performance. The Gomi is marginally softer than our other aggressive models and is a completely new last built from the ground up. Some of the features found on the Gomi include:

  • Large thin sticky rubber toe patch for excellent sensitivity and grip while toe hooking
  • Power Rand rear rand that transfers power to the forefoot and toebox
  • High tension heel rand brings the power to where you need it
  • 3D Molded heal cup that tucks under rear rand for durability

Gomi comes in two colors (each a different width) the wide version of the Gomi is Seagrass. The narrow version of the Gomi is Pink. It fits similar to most peoples street shoe sizes (results may vary). Size the same as your street shoe size for an aggressive fit. Sizing is the same as Acro size.

This nearly all-rubber boot had some of the best all-shoe feedback of the test. Translation: it’s sensitive everywhere, from the toe box to the heel cup to the scumming patch. (Most rock shoes only offer supreme sensitivity in one or two of these spots.) One tester confirmed this on a modern-style gym problem that involved rocking over a sloping jib screwed onto the side of a triangular volume. The hold was angled in such a way that you could only drop your heel—not toe—onto it. The Gomi did better than just about all the other shoes I tried on this problem, mainly because I could feel the jib through the molded heel cup and thus trusted the shoes on this bizarre move. Ditto for scumming and toeing into tiny jibs on gym boulders and overhanging rock. The socklike fit and tensioned Power Rand drive you down into the big toe, despite the Gomi’s merely mild downturn, offering an almost prehensile grip. On the flip side, this pair of shoes is not incredibly supportive, so I experienced some calf fatigue and squish on longer edging pitches, and the toe is a bit too rounded for micro crimps. That said, as a bouldering or sport-crossover shoe fit for wide dogs, the Gomi is one of the better, friendlier-priced options out there.

We were impressed by the Gomi overall. A soft midsole, a toe box fully encased in rubber, and a comfortable fit make this shoe a great option for gym climbing or your next toe-hook-ridden cave project. We found them to be better at smearing and scumming than edging, so the Gomi is perhaps not the ideal shoe for vertical terrain or slabs. A reasonable price tag and durable construction round out this solid Velcro slipper.
