Overall, the Team 5.10 is an excellent shoe for steep rock. For the purpose of pulling in with one’s feet, they perform exceptionally well. I’d recommend them as primary shoe for sport climber and boulder who want to climb a variety of steep terrain. I believe them to be the best all-around steep rock shoe on the market. Because of their versatility, the Team 5.10 does lack in some specialized areas. I don’t recommend this shoe for climbing terrain less than vertical. This shoe is also not suited for novice climbers as the shape is too specific.
The Team thrives on granite (plentiful in Five Ten's home state of California), and steep to overhanging bouldering and climbing where the super sticky rubber will enable spidermanesque smearing. Though Five Ten is headed in the right direction with the concept, they haven't developed the rubber to match it yet. With the introduction of technology such as La Sportiva's P3-Permanent Power Platform, which enables the shoes to hold their down turned shape, Five Ten will be ready to compete in that arena. Until then, for a diversely capable shoe that thrives in a multitude of steep sport, and bordering scenarios, go with the Shaman or Solution.
The Five Ten Team 5.10 is a high-end bouldering and sport climbing shoe capable of handling a variety of angles and rock types, ranging from granite boulders in Switzerland and steep, limestone sport routes at the Wild Iris, to more technical, vertical climbs at the Finns in Idaho.
With the modified entry in the new black model, any intermediate or advanced sport climber or boulderer looking for a well-rounded performance shoe geared for precision footwork—or one specifically for toe hooking—should definitely check out the Team 5.10.
Five Ten’s latest version of the Team Shoe is the most sensitive shoe in the Gear Guide. The thin outsole (3.5mm Stealth Mystique rubber) and aggressive downturn allow you to grab holds on steep terrain right out of the box. Its narrow toe profile excels on pockets and shines at hooking, thanks to the massive coverage of rubber, including a high rand and coated heel and toe. The rubber is 20 percent thinner than on most rock shoes, and testers noticed: “My right toe blew within three months of regular wear,” said one tester. “But while the rubber is thin, the performance is very high.” With an elastic opening and no real tongue, it fits like a slipper. But it has one Velcro strap that cinches over the top of the foot. All testers agreed that this shoe is money for bouldering. Try them on before buying—the sizing on these tends to be different than on other Five Ten shoes.
