The R3 crash pad utilizes a completely new fill system that enables the pad to lay flat, folds easily over features and increases the dampening ability of the impact force from falls. The baffles of the new R3 contain recycled EVA foam that would normally be collected and shipped for disposal. This sustainable and innovative part of the system reduces manufacturing costs and helps reduce environmental waste. The lower manufacturing cost enables us to provide a more durable shell system. The 1680 denier nylon shell construction makes this pad THE most durable crash pad in the industry. Because the shell will have a longer lifespan, we will be offering replacement foam for the R3 system so it can be passed down for years to come.

Packing gear is easy and secure with ample room inside as well as side and bottom flaps to hold the stuff in. The suspension system is solidly attached with comfortable shoulder straps, chest strap, waist belt and the extremely useful handle between the shoulder straps for loading the pad onto your back in pack-mode. There is also daisy chain webbing on the back of the pad for quick easy attachments of the straps as well as any other gear. The 55" x 35" x 4" size is a fair amount above the average size of about 48" x 36" x 4" but it still feels like a smaller size pad when carrying it. It is heavy though. At 18 lb. it weighs about twice as much as other pads that are only about 6" smaller. The weight can be worth it when you consider it is the best pad for conforming to uneven landing zones, all the extra features it has and the dense recycled foam. That all adds weight but they are all very useful features and are, in our opinion worth the extra poundage and are what make the pad an overall winner.
“When I needed this pad, I needed this pad,” said one tester who used it for a month in Hueco Tanks, Texas. “The separated tubes of foam wrapped around those hard-to-protect obstacles that tend to be right in the middle of your landing zone, so my ankles (and ass) were protected when I fell.” Although this pad is hefty at 18 lbs., it covers 55” x 35” x 4” (about half a foot longer than other mid-sized pads), and the weight came in handy when protecting angled landings: “It stayed in place without sliding off like smaller pads.” Plus, the weight carries well with the fully padded shoulder straps and waistbelt.
In practice, this design possesses the positive attributes of both hinged pads and "taco-style" designs. Like a taco pad, it allows the user to easily cram shoes and gear inside for carrying but immediately lays flat like a hinged pad without the danger of bottoming out if you land on the seam. The malleability of the material allows for the pad to be draped over uneven landing zones as it holds and conforms to the terrain beneath it. At 18 lbs the weight is comparable to many other pads out there and its versatility, size (55"x35"x4"), and strength of the casing are well worth the $189 price tag.
