Salewa was founded in 1935 in Munich and were making crampons by 1961 (after making backpacks and ski poles and other outdoor items).

In 1990, Salewa was bought by Oberalp, a large company that owns other niche brands like Speedo and Dynafit. Allowing more growth by streamlining distribution and sales.

Salewa has not slowed down since it started and is continuing to innovate all areas.
