What is not to like about this locking carabiner? It scored well in every test. It is light yet big enough to hold many knots of climbing rope. It is compact yet still easy to handle due to the featured spine. The key-lock gate is one of the smoothest to operate and has a special design to prevent over-tightening and locking up. It is incredibly smooth to belay with (the regular Petzl Attache only beats it by a hair).

Overall, the Petzl ATTACHE 3D sacrifices a bit of rope-work performance for much lighter weight and bulk. If you’re a climber who likes to cruise up multi-pitch routes and demands a lighter rack, then the benefits of this carabiner far outweigh the negatives. But if you’re a casual weekender who belays on sport routes or uses locking biners for toprope anchors, then a standard, rounded carabiner may be a better choice where weight is not an issue.

Recently, I have been loving the Petzl Attache 3D (the gold coloured carabiner in the picture) which is very light (55 grams) and also has Petzl’s Keylock system which essentially means it has a very smooth nose allowing ropes or belay plates to slide in smoothly without getting caught up. The Attache also features Petzl’s ‘Red Lock’ indicator system which gives a clear visual guide to whether the gate is screwed up or not. Full details on the Attache can be found on the Petzl site here.

THE KEYLOCK ROCK
Petzl long led the quick-clippin’ pack with its early adoption of the snag-free keylock nose. The Attache 3D locker continues this tradition, guarding against unwanted hang-ups when clipping belay loops, slings, etc.
LOW-PROFILE GATE DESIGN
The screwlock gate has been streamlined, to reduce any unwanted snagging and allow for easy biner rotation.
NOW IN 3-D!
Petzl pared away excess aluminum to yield this distinctive 3-D shape . . . and a full-size (still compatible with a münter hitch), superlight locking biner.
