Friend 4
Description
The new-gen of our iconic double axle cams.
The Friend is the most advanced piece of gear on any climber’s rack. The new generation of cams still feature: the 13.75° cam angle, hollow double axles, and milled lobes for max holding power and minimal walking.
The new Flow Cord, with a seamless core-mantle construction, allows smooth, resistance-free extension. The range now features a size 0.3 with double axles and the size 4 integrates a symmetrical spring loaded lobes locking mechanism.
The key feature of Wild Country Friend is the combination of thumbloop and extendable cord. This design reduces the need for extra draws, minimizes rope drag, and lessens walking.
- Thumbloop + Extendable Cord: The signature feature of Wild Country Friends – combining the ease of a thumb loop with the benefits of an extendable sling, up to 20 cm
- Extendable Flow Cord technology: A new seamless core-mantle cord that eliminates stiff bartacks, enabling smooth and snag-free extension
- Nylon and UHMWPE outer sheath resists cuts and abrasion, while the UHMWPE core provides mechanical strength
- Red wear indicator in the core signals when it's time for sling replacement
- 14-years certified lifespan: Resists UV, moisture, and freeze-thaw stress (10 years of service life + 4 years of storage)
- Hollow double axle design: Minimizes weight while maximizing cam range for better size overlap
- Milled and polished cam lobes: Softer, untreated aluminum offers 8–10% more grip than anodized surfaces
- Spring-loaded lobes locking system (Size 4): Central spring ensures symmetrical cam closure and easy one-handed operation

As a Joshua Tree local, I appreciate the added durability of the new slings. The coarse monzogranite found in the Mojave Desert tends to shred soft goods, and I’m always wary of including Dyneema in my anchors if they contact the rock in any way. While I would still avoid repeated rubbing of any slings on rock, the durable Flow Cord in the new Friendsinspires more confidence. After several months of guiding full-time in Joshua Tree and setting up dozens of top-rope anchors, I haven’t noticed any signs of wear on the slings. I did notice that the cam axles started getting a little sticky, but this is a common maintenance problem and typically solved easily with cam lube.
