Love Bump/Knuckle Box Technology

Love Bump/Knuckle Box

The combination of the Knuckle Box and Love Bump force your toes into a position of power while remaining incredibly comfortable. The Knuckle Box makes room for your big toe knuckle to rest in a curled position without having to push fabric and rubber out of the way which cause hot spots in other shoes. The Love Bump fills the dead space under your toes while putting much needed energy towards the edging surface. These two features work together to provide an incredible edging platform.
Trax® Rubber Technology

Trax® Rubber

TRAX XT® high friction rubber is formulated to be the highest performing rubber on the market. TRAX-XT®has a perfect balance of high friction and edging power on different types of rock and plastic holds while performing consistently over a wide range of temperatures.
VTR3D Technology

VTR3D

With VTR3D, the “high wear” zone of the rand is thicker, while low wear areas are kept thin to reduce pressure points and hot spots around your foot.

Outdoor Gear Lab Gear Review rating 3/5

This ultra high performance shoe is the newest design in the Chris Sharma Series from Evolv. Evolv says it represents "a new way of approaching how we build shoes". The aggressive downturned toe is similar to the Evolv Shaman but has a pointier more precise toe tip. With new design features the Nexxo could take it over as the top selling high performance shoe in the Evolv line. Both shoes are aggressive but the Nexxo has a thinner 1mm midsole and is therefore more conforming and sensitive than the Shaman that has a 1.5mm midsole. The Nexxo also has a custom variable thickness rubber sole. The other major difference is the single Velcro strap on the Nexxo compared to the triple Velcro straps on the Shaman. Since the shoes are already fairly tight the single strap keeps the weight of the shoe down and it works quick and tightens the shoe fine. The single strap on the Nexxo actually tightens the arch area so well it makes for a very snug fit. The single Nexxo strap is also not as thin as the single strap on the popular and also high performing La Sportiva Solution making it less prone to wearing through. The rubber on top of the Nexxo provides good coverage for toe hooking on steep terrain. The heel is a bit loose fitting.

The Evolv Nexxo is the newest addition to Evolv’s Chris Sharma Signature Series, designed by the maestro himself, is the Nexxo: a semi-stiff downturned slipper for high-end bouldering and sport climbing. It is an easy on, easy off performance slipper with a suction-cup fit and an asymmetrical last. A Velcro strap provides arch support under foot, while a comfortable micro-fiber lining keeps the shoe comfortable during a long pitch. However, the heel was too high-volume for my wide foot.

What I thought would be a soft, Five Ten Team-like slipper turned out to be the stiffer, more supportive shoe I was searching for. I’ve used my Nexxos for everything, from steep Alpine granite bouldering in Austria to vertical limestone sport routes in the South Lakes and Yorkshire (and a whole load of other good things in-between) and I’ve genuinely not found their limitation yet.

Shoe choice is a personal matter and fit is always going to be the deciding factor. The Evolv Nexxo certainly fills a niche in offer us narrow footed folk a decent slipper with a bit more robustness than previously available (ie. Teams). If you’ve already fallen in love with the Instinct VS, you’re likely to find these too low volume and pretty similar anyway. If, like me, you’ve found the Instincts baggy and insecure, you’re likely onto a winner.

“They’re soft, aggressive, and fit like a customized glove,” one tester said who loved the Nexxo’s overall feel and response after taking them to pocket paradise Ten Sleep, Wyoming. The Nexxo shined on the slabby then super-steep Aunt Jemima’s Bisquick Thunderdome (5.12+), requiring both delicate edging and powerful pulling. After experiencing their “breakout performance,” our testers were not surprised to learn that Chris Sharma is the man behind this sport-specific slipper hybrid. (Evolv calls it a hybrid because although it is constructed like a slipper, the Velcro strap offers more security and a vacuum fit.) The Nexxo has some of the same features as the Shaman (the first shoe from Sharma), which made it a favorite high-performance shoe, including the Love Bump that pushes toes into an arched and precision-improving position, and the Knuckle Box that makes this position fairly comfortable (and not torturous).
