Description

Sometimes an idea hits you and it’s like, ''duh?!'', why didn’t we think of that earlier? The Trango Shark combines two useful and common climbing tools into one: a beautiful swept handle, stainless nut tool, and a razor-sharp knife. The blade is machined from surgical quality 440-C stainless with a serrated blade—perfect for sawing through the wad of slings that’s keeping you from clipping that fixed pin. While the locking blade can be opened and closed with one hand (duh!) it’s absolutely impossible to open when clipped to a carabiner (duh!).

You need a nut tool for teasing out obstinate wires; snaring inverted cams; using mini-cheat-stick-style for those just-out-of-reach placements; and cramming sardines into your gaping gob. You need a knife for slicing away ancient fixed slings; salvaging jammed rap ropes; peeling apples; and endless surgical procedures (see Touching the Void). Therein lies the utilitarian genius of the Trango Shark ($29.95)—a knife and nut tool in one.

Outdoor Gear Lab Gear Review rating 3/5

The Trango Shark is great for anyone who might already have a separate knife on their harness. The Shark is also a great option for folks who climb in less popular areas with generally long routes where you might have to replace old webbing or put new cordage on rappel anchors. Or if you climb on longer routes where backing off is more than just a small possibility and you will be forced to leave gear and cordage as you retreat downward.
