Superlight Offset Rock 5

Rating

My vote: None ( 5.5 avg )

Description

Less is more. Subtle, superlight and secure, Superlight Offset Rocks are by far the lightest passive pro per size in the world. Simple, yet incredibly effective, they combine the proven curve of Rocks with a radical side taper that adds a new dimension to protection.
Intuitive and easy to place, they’re perfect for trimming a rack without cutting down options. An instant classic, and a big hit with our testers, all that’s missing from these slimline superstars is weight.

Some unique advantages offset by a few quirks

Pros
Versatility with normal and offset orientations
Great in shallow placements
Slender profile allows you to avoid nubbins in highly textured rock
Lightweight
Cons
Slender wire can be too flexible (see below)
Offset profile is good but not my favourite
Familiarity
I’ve used it a bunch

I like these nuts, but I am yet to find that I can't leave the ground without them. I have classic WC Rocks, Wallnuts, DMM alloy offsets, WC Superlights. As others have said, I think these nuts work best in partnership with your current favourites, whatever that might be.

They are light weight, versatile and and allow for placemnts in shallow features, and when you need this, it comes as a great relief. I would say the offset profile is OK, but I prefer my DMM alloy offsets every time. Sizes 5-9 have slender wires (where #10 is thicker) and this makes careful manipulation of the nut (esp sizes 8&9) pretty challenging at times, especially on a 'hard' lead. The shape of WC rocks is great, but given that the corners are not overly rounded, this wire manipuation/flexibility issue is perhaps made worse because of it. Similarly, cleaning these can be tricky when the wire wants to bend a little too easily. These nuts work very well in smooth and fractured rock and place quite well in highly textured rock. In highly textured rock you can find a stable placement by slipping them easily between nubbins, however I would say it's easier to find stability with a Wallnut in this instance. Many climbers love these for their low weight and bulk, but 9 times out of 10 I would prefer a nut that's quicker and easier to place.

The UIAA equipment standard provides a baseline for equipment performance in a test lab under controlled conditions on new equipment. Although these test conditions are relevant to the conditions encountered climbing, conditions encountered at the crags and the condition of the equipment are equally important. This recommendation from the UIAA member federation The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) provides vital equipment information that is NOT explicitly addressed in the standard, particularly failure modes of the equipment and recommendations for the use, inspection, maintenance, and retirement of equipment.
